What this measures

Twelve strains that quietly add up

The Caregiver Strain Check looks across the pressures that can add up for family caregivers — emotional overload, lost sleep, your own health, time for yourself, isolation, family tension, work conflict, money worries, resentment and guilt, loss of control, anxiety about the future, and the feeling you should be doing more. Each answer scores 0–4, for a total of 0 to 48, which places you in one of four broad editorial ranges: low, moderate, high, or very high strain. These ranges organize the reflection; they are not clinical cutoffs.

The Caregiver Strain Check covers topics informed by established caregiver-burden research — including the Zarit Burden Interview (Zarit, 1980), the Modified Caregiver Strain Index (Thornton & Travis, 2003), the Pearlin caregiver stress-process model (1990), and the Caregiver Burden Inventory (Novak & Guest, 1989). KinKeeper wrote the questions, ranges, and recommendations. It is not a validated instrument or diagnosis.

Common questions

Caregiver strain, answered

What is caregiver burnout?

Caregiver burnout is a state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion that builds up when the demands of caring for someone outpace your own rest and support. Common signs include constant fatigue, trouble sleeping, irritability, withdrawing from friends, feeling resentful or guilty, and neglecting your own health. It tends to build quietly, which is why a periodic check-in helps.

Is this a real test?

It’s a structured self-reflection tool, not a validated screening instrument or clinical diagnosis. KinKeeper wrote the 12 questions, score ranges, and recommendations using topics informed by established caregiver-burden research. It can help you notice patterns and choose a next step; it does not replace a conversation with a healthcare provider.

How is the score calculated?

Each of the 12 questions is scored 0 (Never) to 4 (Nearly always), for a total of 0–48. KinKeeper groups the total into four broad editorial ranges — low (0–12), moderate (13–24), high (25–36), or very high (37–48) strain. These ranges organize the reflection and are not clinical cutoffs.

What should I do with my result?

Use it as a prompt to act early. Each result comes with practical next steps — protecting time off, sharing the load, finding a support group, and guarding your own health — that scale with your level of strain. You can download a PDF of your results and recommendations, and re-take the check every month or so to catch rising strain.
